IWGP Research Group:International Workshop for African Archaeobotany (IWAA) |
Description
This workshop, first held in 1994, aims to provide a basis for researchers interested in archaeobotany and past human plant use on the African continent to compare and discuss results, share methods, practices, and new ideas. Its meetings were modelled on the IWGP meetings, in having a laboratory session in which participants can show some of their specimens and discuss issues of identification and interpretation at the microscope. In addition to the study of plant macroremains, plant microremains (phytoliths, pollen and starch grains), are often also present. Historical, ethnological and linguistic analyses, and molecular analyses are also regularly integrated, where these contribute to archaeology of past African plant use.
